UnderMine is an action-adventure roguelike with RPG elements, developed by Thorium. Players control a peasant delving into a procedurally generated mine beneath a fantasy world. The game emphasizes combat, exploration, and resource management. Each run involves navigating multiple levels, defeating enemies, and acquiring various items.
Combat is real-time and action-oriented. Players utilize a pickaxe for melee attacks and an arsenal of throwable bombs for ranged damage and environmental interaction. Enemies have distinct attack patterns and resistances, requiring adaptive strategies. The game features a persistent hub area, the Hub, which evolves as players progress and unlock new content. This area allows for permanent upgrades and interactions with NPCs who provide quests, services, and lore.
Roguelike Elements
- Procedural Generation: Mine layouts, enemy placements, and item drops are randomized for each run.
- Permadeath: Upon death, players lose all items and gold accumulated during that run, but unlockable permanent upgrades and blueprints persist.
- Run-based Progression: The core gameplay loop involves repeated runs into the mine to gather resources, unlock new content, and attempt to reach deeper levels.
RPG Mechanics
- Permanent Upgrades: Gold and other resources found in runs can be spent in the Hub to unlock permanent stat increases, new starting items, and improved shop inventories.
- Item Synergy: Hundreds of different relics and potions can be found, offering passive buffs, active abilities, and status effects. Many items interact with each other, creating powerful combinations.
- Curse System: Curses are negative modifiers that can be acquired, often in exchange for powerful items or benefits. Managing curses is a key strategic element.
Content & Scope
The game includes multiple distinct biomes, each with unique enemies, environmental hazards, and boss encounters. Over 100 different relics, 25 potions, and numerous curses are available to discover. Secret areas, hidden challenges, and unlockable characters add to the replayability. UnderMine supports gamepads and keyboard/mouse input.
